Why Do We Need Dehumidifiers?

!±8± Why Do We Need Dehumidifiers?

Summer becomes more intolerable because we begin to perspire a great deal and perspiration is caused due to the humidity present in the air. Humidity is the amount of moisture present in the air. If the air around us has more moisture than it can possibly absorb, then the weather becomes more unbearable. But on the other hand a certain amount of moisture should be present in the air if the air should not become cackling dry and uncomfortable as it does in winter.

Excessive humidity can cause problems because the moisture causes fungus and mould and mildew to form and this in turn causes allergic health problems. Wood furniture, doors and windows can be damaged due to excessive humidity. In the same way excessive dryness can cause chaffing and aridity and breathing problems. The level of moisture present in the air can be measured with the help of a hygrometer. The requisite level of moisture content to make the air around us soothing has been gauged to be about forty or fifty percent. The problem can thus be addressed by controlling the moisture level or humidity of the room by the use of a dehumidifier.

While air conditioners also help to cool the air and keep us comfortable, dehumidifiers provide the additional benefit of controlling humidity in the air. Dehumidifiers can be fitted anywhere where there is excessive moisture due to steaming washing and bathing. Depending both on the weather conditions and the room conditions one can choose the right kind of dehumidifier. A large room will require a dehumidifier with a capacity to extract more moisture from the air. This can be anywhere between twenty to forty litres a day. A smaller room requires a lesser water extraction capacity.

Since this is a mechanical device, a certain amount of noise may be expected while it is working. One must however, check beforehand and choose a device that makes less noise. The water that is extracted from the air in the room gets collected into a tank, big or small depending on the capacity of the dehumidifier. It is very important to periodically empty this tank. The unit may not work until the water is emptied. In order to sift the dust that collects, there a special filter provided and this makes the air pure. This will also ensure longer life for the coils. However these filters need to be cleaned periodically. In winter, frost collects and brings the working of the device to a halt. In order to avert this problem the hot gas defrost feature can be added.
